Every time I go to Hobucken to paddle or sail, I’m reminded how great the people there are, and how welcoming Shawn and Pate’s BoatYard is. Paul posted a nice history of Pate’s Boat Yard that he researched while I was out there last year.

My wounds have pretty much healed, both physical and emotional (so hard to not have finished a challenge). Now it’s time to figure out ‘what happened’. When I got to the 2nd Checkpoint, 245 miles later and 4 days into it, I dropped the word fun, and stated ‘I’m having such an adventure”. I even wrote an article about that first challenge, titling it “It’s not for the fun, it’s the adventure!”.

Paddled / sailed / surfed downwind on a broad reach to Corolla.  

Winds 20-25 mph with gusts of 30 mph.  Maximum speed was 8.3 mph.  Very exciting day!   

The new sail works great.  Yesterday I sailed upwind at 1-2 mph without paddling.

At least 15 different boats, even a few B&amp;B motorboats were there. Many sized as sea kayaks are completed weighing 45-50 lbs, some as low as 40 lbs. Only Gumby and I were there to camp at the lake Fri night with temps down around 34F. By Sat we were a group of 11 who where there to play (though only 7 stayed and camped). The sun came out strong and we had a beautiful warm afternoon with highs in the 70s.

My kayak club, the Carolina Kayak Club is having a gathering of Greenland-style paddling enthusiasts.  Low key, it's just a weekend retreat of paddling and camping, and with no real calendar of events, agendas, or formal classes. We’ll just paddle and roll and brace to our hearts content.

It was a beautiful day, with 2-3 ft surf. 

We’d met at the drawbridge that goes over to the beach, and paddled north cutting through the marsh to Mason’s Inlet.

I would consider the weather to have been mild for our area, yet it was still quite a formidable challenge for all. The challenges in this race are the distance and large fetch getting the Harlowe, then the current and tides getting into and past Beaufort, then the shallow water, winds, and nets on Core Sound.

Kristen (KiwiBird), David, and I got to Pate’s Boat Yard late Fri and visited with a few old friends from my April visit there. I have a Seals and a Seal Line neoprene spray skirt.  Both slowly get saturated from the drips on the skirt from by GP, regardless of which GP I use (Lumpy, Betsy Bay, Superior).

My son Alan is currently sailing the Pacific Ocean on his way to the Samoan Islands.  Yesterday they made land on the island of Ofu, said to be one of the world's best beaches.  They'll spend a day before sailing another 50 miles over to Pago Pago.

The only real shopping left for our sailing trip next week is the perishable food stuff, I’ll get that done right before the trip.  Still packing though.
